Droplets Sit and Slide Anisotropically on Soft, Stretched Substrates

چکیده
Anisotropically wetting substrates enable useful control of droplet behavior across a range applications. Usually, these involve chemically or physically patterning the substrate surface, applying gradients in properties like temperature electrical field. Here, we show that flat, stretched, uniform soft also exhibits asymmetric wetting, both terms how droplets slide and their static shape. Droplet dynamics are strongly affected by stretch: glycerol on silicone with 23\% stretch 67\% faster direction parallel to applied than perpendicular direction. Contrary classical theory, equilibrium appear elongated, oriented Both effects arise from droplet-induced deformations near contact line.

Small droplets on superhydrophobic substrates.
We investigate the wetting behavior of liquid droplets on rough hydrophobic substrates for the case of droplets that are of comparable size to the surface asperities. Using a simple three-dimensional analytical free-energy model, we have shown in a recent letter [M. Gross, F. Varnik, and D. Raabe, EPL 88, 26002 (2009)] that, in addition to the well-known Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel states, there e...
متن کاملDispensing picoliter droplets on substrates using dielectrophoresis
Liquid dielectrophoresis is exploited to initiate rapid, transient flow of aqueous liquids along co-planar electrodes patterned on insulating substrates. The flow induced by the non-uniform electric field leads to a new electrostatic equilibrium. A reduced-order model predicts the transient motion of the rivulet. When the field is removed, capillary instability breaks up the rivulet into regula...
متن کاملEvaporation of droplets on strongly hydrophobic substrates.
The manner in which the extreme modes of droplet evaporation (namely, the constant contact radius and the constant contact angle modes) become indistinguishable on strongly hydrophobic substrates is described. Simple asymptotic expressions are obtained which provide good approximations to the evolutions of the contact radius, the contact angle, and the volume of droplets evaporating in the extr...
متن کاملFormation and mobility of droplets on composite layered substrates.
A mesoscale fluid film placed on a solid support may break up and form droplets. In addition, droplets may exhibit spontaneous translation by modifying the wetting properties of the substrate, resulting in asymmetry in the contact angles. We examine mechanisms for droplet formation and motion on uniform and terraced landscapes, i.e., composite substrates. The fluid film stability, droplet forma...
متن کاملA general stability criterion for droplets on structured substrates
Wetting morphologies on solid substrates, which may be chemically or topographically structured, are studied theoretically by variation of the free energy which contains contributions from the substrate surface, the fluid– fluid interface and the three-phase contact line. The first variation of this free energy leads to two equations—the classical Laplace equation and a generalized contact line...
